Let's jump in!

First of all, today is going to be a long one but,

If you want to hear about the behind the scenes of building an online course, this is going to have much more value than a course itself on building an online course πŸ˜…

I will be covering:

  • Where I got the idea for the course topic
  • How and why I tested the course idea first
  • How I built the course
  • How I launched the course (and sold out)
  • How the course went

This newsletter is brought to you by:

1 | Finding the topic idea for the course

Before creating any type of offer for your audience, you need to find the right idea.

Picking the wrong idea (or topic) could lead to a complete failure.

Learning from my past failures, I knew that I had to choose a topic that had a lot of demand from my audience.

At this point in my journey, 75% of the students coming to me 1:1 coaching sessions were always coming for the exact same thing:
β†’ building their online music business through content creation.

As a result, I ended up repeating myself over and over again.

This is where I saw the demand and first got the idea of turning everything I knew into an online course.

2 | Testing and validating the idea

Before spending 6 months building a product that your audience might or might not want, you should always test the idea first.

This is why I ran a free 2-hour masterclass in early November 2023.

I announced that spots were limited (exactly 50) and all the spots were gone in less than 1 hour!!!

As I was expecting it, I also had prepared a link for people that missed it to join a waitlist for the next one and I had over 400 people join!

At this point, I knew that the idea was good and validated as there was obviously a lot of interest in it βœ…

Doing the masterclass also had another objective:
β†’ gathering feedback and testimonials.

After the masterclass, I asked how people liked it and asked for testimonials if they wanted to share their experience.

I received great feedback and was able to get 10+ testimonials, which then was going to help me sell the paid version of the course.

It's one thing for the course creator to say it's a great course, but it's always better to have actual past student sharing their own experience and opinion!

3 | Building the course

To be honest with you, when I first had to get started on the course:
I was lost, I had no idea where to start πŸ˜…

Deciding to go for it took me months!

Mainly because I had my burnout right after the free masterclass but I was also incredibly stressed with the pressure of such an undertaking.

I had to get over my own limiting beliefs which included the good old imposter syndrome and thinking that literally no one would sign up.

One of my biggest fears was that no one would get any results - it terrified me!

After months talking about it with my boyfriend (who is literally my therapist and business partner at this point πŸ˜…), we decided that it was time and the next natural move I had to take for the business.

Plus, I didn't want to keep the people from the waitlist waiting too long...

So at the beginning of March 2024, I started the creation of the course by writing the whole curriculum and all the lessons.

Originally, it was going to be a pre-recorded online course.

But by the beginning of April, I took the decision to make it a Live Cohort instead.

There are a few reasons why:

  • I wanted to get the MVP (= minimum viable product) version of the course out and iterate over time with customer's feedback, rather than spending 6 months building something that might not be the best.
  • With a Live Cohort style, I can iterate on the product faster depending on what the students want and get to a better product faster.
  • It also allows me to provide more personal support and guidance directly to the student, which leads to better results for them.
  • And I prefer the social interaction of the Live lessons rather than pre-recorded videos where I don't get to connect with my students.

4 | Launching the course

When I announced the course, I only had the lessons written.

The material of the course (aka the slides, community, workbook etc..) weren’t made yet.

Why? Because it didn’t have to be and it allowed me to adapt the course with student's feedback during their onboarding questionnaire.

So all I had to do at this point was to:

  • Build the landing page
  • Write the 7-Day email sales sequence
  • & promote the waitlist

By the time the course was opened for enrolments, I had over 600 people in the waitlist.

One thing to mention here is that I ONLY promoted the course to the waitlist. I didn't announce it on my social media - at all!

My heart rate was around 155bpm when I first checked my emails on the first day of enrolments but in the end, it worked out much better than I expected πŸ˜…

In terms of numbers, I made 5 early sales on the Sunday before enrolments opened and by the end of Day 1, half the spots were taken.

Then, I continued to make sales every day and I sold out by Sunday! 25 students had enrolled πŸ₯³

To be honest with you, I had told myself that if I was able to get 5 students in, I would have been super happy!!!

It's something I like to do - keep expectations low so you aren't disappointed in the worst case scenario.

5 | Running the course

Once the enrolments closed and all the selling was done, all I had left to do was... to deliver the course πŸ˜ƒ

The planning was intense! We had 2 live lessons per week followed by 1-hour of Q&A, a student workbook with assignments, personal support by email and a community on HeartBeat so they could all connect with each other.

To be honest with you, it was MUCH more work than I thought but it was such a blast!

I had an amazing experience! Connecting live with the students is something I definitely prefer!

The best part is that so far I got great feedback and only 5 star ratings!

I will share some of the students results once they start coming in as it’s going to take time to apply everything we talked about in the course but for now, here is Zack's testimonial.

I hope that hearing about my experience was helpful for you.

If you are planning to release a course at some point or build any type of offer around your music business, you can take a lot of my learnings and apply to your own.

β†’ The Cohort 2 of MusiCreator will open for enrolments in July. Join the waitlist now.

🎢 | Music Discoveries Of The Week

Without You - KYGO, HAYLA

KYGO recently announced his new album will release on June 21st and also released another song from the album. Quite different from the typical Kygo music you're used to but very refreshing and unique while still keeping his sound signatures.

Famous Friends - Chris Young, Kane Brown
Maybe it's something you don't know but... my most listened music genre is NOT EDM, it's country music πŸ˜… I'm a sucker for country! Today, while driving, I heard this song (which isn't necessarily recent) but it got me hooked instantly and now I can't stop listening to it! If you feel like a country song, try this one.

❀️ | My Favourite Resources For Music Artists

πŸŽ₯ A new and easier way to approach music content creation [Channel]

In my last music masterminds group call, we talked a lot about how social media is changing and what we can do to make creating content easier for us music artists.

Cheska, one of our member, is absolutely killing it (in my opinion)! She's bringing a fresh new vibe to music content creation by bringing you with her on her journey and days.

Feel free to analyze her videos and see how you could apply such a concept to your own so you can output more videos, grow your fanbase, attract cutomers/clients and enjoy the process at the same time.

πŸ–Ό Thumbsup.tv [Tool]

When it comes to YouTube videos, more than half its success depends on the packaging. The "packaging" of a YouTube video is the thumbnail and title.

This tool, thumbsup.tv allows you to visualize your title and thumbnail on all the different format possible one YouTube.

This is what I use for ALL my videos, to try a bunch of variations (sometimes way too many) until I find the right one.
