Let's jump in!

πŸ‘€ The biggest shift in music production history

If there is one video you watch this week, make it this one ⬇️

It starts by saying that:

The top producers today, who started 10/15 years ago, would have a very hard time making it in 2024.

If you don't want to spend time watching it (although you should!), here is a quick summary ⬇️

He starts by sharing how the definition of what a 'music producer' is has completely changed.

"They used to just make music" he says.

But now 3 things have changed:

1 | Audience Discovery

Before, artists were booked depending on their music and their skills. Now, they get booked depending on their social media presence.

Before, the audience was discovering artists at venues or on the radio. Now, they discover artists on social media.

Before, a programmer would choose which music you would listen to. Now, the algorithm decides what you hear.

So you can't be a 'good producer' anymore, you need to be good at the social media as well. Having a great song isn't enough, unless there's great marketing behind it.

2 | You are a business

You are no longer a music producer, you are also a business.

Labels used to do 360 deals, which included marketing, PR, a manager etc...

But now they rarely do these anymore.

So it falls on the music producer to do it all by himself.

The marketing, the business, the PR, the networking, the deals, the social media...

Sadly, you need to be more than someone who just makes music.

3 | Anyone and everyone can be a music producer

Is it a good or a bad thing?

Well it's both!

On one hand, there is now too much information and too much competition.

Anyone can make good music with today's technology and resources, pitching the same labels and playlists as you.

But on the other hand, it has never been easier and more accessible to become a music producer.

So what can we do about this?

Change is inevitable.

First, you have to stay in love with the process.

Remember that why you started in the first place was for your love of music.

Now that being said, all we can do is to learn how to play the current game and adapt.

Which is why I created MusiCreator πŸš€

A 5-weeks Live Cohort Online Course that will teach you how to grow your own fanbase on social media and monetize your music skills online.

(Enrolment opens next month. 25 past students. 5/5 ratings)

πŸ” Can we automate art for business?

In the book 'Buy Back Your Time', I read this quote:

If your business depend on you, you don’t own a business - you have a job - Michael E.Gerber

Which obviously got me thinking but,

On top of that, in the same book was a story about the famous painter Andy Warhol.

Andy Warhol is known for his unique painting style but also for his controversial approach to art and business.

Over the years, he systemized his painting process so it could be reproduced by his studio assistants and sold at a commercial scale.

This process allowed him to output 85,000 pieces of quality artwork, under his name, sold at a global scale.

If you ask me... I'd say it's genius!

But I also understand people criticizing him for it.

Can we still call this 'art' at this point?

I personally think so.

He worked hard on the creative process, which is art in itself.

Then, he found a way to monetize his skill while still having all the time in the world to do whatever he wanted to.

Now apply this concept to music and this is how you could build your own music business.

It could be:

  • a music production agency
  • an online mixing and mastering agency
  • a sample and preset pack factory
  • etc...

πŸ’Œ I'd love to hear your thoughts! Feel free to reply to this email if you want to talk about it!

πŸŽ› A fix for disappearing plugins on Ableton

For all Ableton users,

have you ever tried using CamelCrusher but couldn't because the UI was gone?

Well my friend Passoni has the solution for you β†’ Max4Live Wrappers

By using a Max4Live Wrapper, it will allow you to recover the UI, which will enable you to use the plugins again.

They are available for these plugins:

  • CamelCrusher
  • CamelPhat
  • BlackBox Analog Design HG2
  • bx_subfilter
  • MaggEQ4
  • Dangerous BAX EQ Mix

🎹 A quick songwriting tip

When working on a chord progression, I often run into one specific problem:

using the diminished chord in a key.

It sounds horrible to my ear so I don't end up using it...

but sometimes, I'd like to be able to!

This is when I found this video:

Short, simple and straight to the point!

It talks about modal interchange and how to use borrowed chords to help our chord progressions sound better and potentially, more complex.

πŸŽ₯ How to record your DAW screen and audio

Knowing how to record your daw screen and audio might come in handy when:

  • Recording a tutorial
  • Making content for your socials
  • Working with a music brand
  • Sending a wip to a client
  • etc...

As this is a question that often lands in my DMs, I thought I would show you my setup in a quick video ⬇️
